Here I’m am, back behind the wheel after a very needed holiday, making my biggest (survived) work so far! I spent last week at my fathers house in the countryside of the Netherlands, Gorssel. It was a lovely week with great weather, some rain and even thunder too, yes it’s the Netherlands, what to expect? Hahah But I think the weather was a bit resembling of how I felt that week, I haven’t been feeling great lately. A lot of unpleasant things happened, but I’m slowly starting to feel a bit better :). Last week was with ups and downs, one day I felt great and the other I felt the complete opposite, just like the weather 🌞⛈️. It was good to have a week without any pottery related things, but the last few days my fingers have been tickling with a longing for clay! Snowflake crackle glaze, still in progress. The more I use this glaze the better I understand how to use it. It creates a more snowflake like crackle on flat surfaces when it’s applied very thickly (3 to 6mm!). This was the first time I used it on a big dinner plate, although I like it it could be even better. If you look very closely you see some tiny pinholes, it’s weird because most of the time the bubbles are formed when a glaze is applied to thick, but in this case (and this clay) it appears more when the glaze is to thin and there are no bubbles when it’s applied thicker.. do you still understand? Trio of swirly marbled vases <3 Tomorrow I’m going to unload a salt fired kiln with the group of a workshop I joined. Salt firing is a special kind of firing and the results of the glazing will be actually quit different than what you are used to see in my work till now. Mostly I like to work with more natural tones and the colors and textures of the clay it self, but with salt firing you work with a lot of different glazes and slib to decorate but especially the salt that is used during a fire is what’s causing a very special glaze finish. I haven’t been on Instagram so much lately, but I did create a lot of new work and these bowls had the honor to be captured and showed to you all. Bowls were never really my favorite thing to make but since I started to teach the beginner students how to make them I decided to give it another try. And now I actually really like to make bowls ;)! As you can see I trimmed them with a very sharp beveled bottom and a delicate foot and I decorated it with a white and black slib. They are now drying for their bisque firing. So now you’re thinking; hey I just needed a Sinterklaas or Christmas gift! Freshly trimmed and decorated big vase. I really like to throw and trim sharp edges on my work and then to decorate it with smoothly applied abstract slib painting. It feels very freeing to paint this way after being really focused whilst trimming. You’re not (really) in control of how the drawings appear in the end and that’s what I like. As you can see I painted white and black colored circles, which I accentuated with carved lines, either flowy and sharp straight lines. Making a “donut shaped wall hanger” part 1. Hey! Let me show you how to make a donut shaped wall hanger! This is part one of the process, throwing on the wheel. The difficulties of making a donut shape is to throw double walls and then connect them. You don’t want it to collapse or to tear later on, so you need to work very carefully and precisely ;). Pour over for mama. I made this for my mothers birthday, I hope she’s happy with :) At least I’m very happy how it turned out! I love the glaze combo with the gray speckled clay. If you look closely it looks like the glaze is flowing around those little spots. Still adoring black clay combined with white slib. It’s very freeing for me to decorate pots with abstract painting, especially after the precise job of throwing the pot itself. As I really enjoy to work so accurate on shaping the pot, I think I even like it more to just brush on the slib and be surprised by how it will turn out ;). And let’s say that I was really exited whit this one! I love the texture and the drippers, the thicker parts and the nearly transparent parts. •Black and white series• Ooh yes, a marbled wide platter. How cool is this effect!? I made it with black and white clay. Firstly you layer slabs of clay of each color alternately on each other. Then it’s time to wedge it a bit, not to much otherwise you won’t see that nice marble in the clay, it will turn more grayish. Black and white series. I worked with black clay, before the bisque firing when the clay is ‘letherhard’ I apply white slib. The slib is just clay but in a liquid form so you can use it as paint! I really enjoy working with this technique and the possibilities are endless.. ;) What do you think? Close up of a detailed carved bowl. I think I’ll leave the outside ‘naked’ as it is a really nice clay without glaze. It will turn speckled grayish after firing. Made my little plant friend a nice pot. I really like how these colors match! At first the pot was actually a tester for the glaze because it was a new one which hadn’t been tested yet. Later I used this glaze on an urn for a dog, I had the honor to make for an old colleague of mine. Two matching bowls! It’s so interesting how glaze reacts on different surfaces, on these bowls the glaze is a bit drippy with some blue shades, while on the mugs it’s more evenly spread. I think, even if you’ve worked for many many years in ceramics, you still get surprised how a piece will appear after the last glaze firing. Hello! Hoi! Salut! Welcome to my pottery page :) About two years ago I started doing pottery and since the very first lesson I was sold. Boy, do I love to work with clay! The process that starts with having the opportunity to make anything you want, (after some practice off course ;)) a lump of clay, your hands, some water, a spinning wheel and just go! I like how it takes a lot of time to make a piece, and when it’s finally done you feel so satisfied by looking, feeling and admiring it. Now I have my own studio to create new work, I still take it slowly but with little baby steps I’m walking to my own small future business :) I hope that you’ll enjoy my photos as much as I enjoy this wonderful craft.
